The workshop develops as a sensory investigation that explores the power of the volcano. A symbol of uncontrollable energy and transformation, Mount Etna becomes a metaphor for the human condition, where external events – natural phenomena, sudden changes, revelations – can mark a fracture, a “before” and an “after” in both individual and collective experience.
Participants will be involved in recording the environmental sounds of the surrounding area and exploring the Nomadica sound archive. Through practical and theoretical sessions, technical knowledge of field recording will be provided, deepening the use of microphones, recorders, and sound capture techniques in natural environments. From the whispers of the wind between the rocks to the deep rumble of the volcano, from bird songs to the sounds of moving vegetation, to the sonification of seismic data.
Each element will contribute to the construction of a sonic narrative. These sounds will be reworked in post-production, providing an acoustic portrait of the landscape that captures its wild and enigmatic character.
The workshop includes moments of reflection on the sound landscape of the volcano, listening sessions, and sharing with other field recordists in a didactic-experiential approach, culminating in a night-time soundwalk along the slopes of the volcano.
The exploration of the relationship between man and nature will translate into excursions through iconic locations such as the trails up the volcano, the Valley of the Bove, the Alcantara Gorges, caves, and extinct craters that shape the landscape.
Etna will not just be an object of study, but a true protagonist, in a constant dialogue between nature and technology, perception and the unknown.

I partecipanti saranno coinvolti nella registrazione dei suoni ambientali del territorio circostante e nell’esplorazione dell’archivio sonoro di Nomadica. Attraverso sessioni pratiche e teoriche, verranno fornite nozioni tecniche di field recording, approfondendo l’uso di microfoni, registratori e tecniche di ripresa del suono in ambienti naturali. Dai sussurri del vento tra le rocce al rombo profondo del vulcano, dal canto degli uccelli ai suoni della vegetazione in movimento, fino alla sonificazione dei dati sismografici. Ogni elemento contribuirà alla costruzione di una narrazione sonora. Questi suoni verranno rielaborati in post-produzione, restituendo un ritratto acustico del paesaggio che ne cattura il carattere selvaggio ed enigmatico.
Il laboratorio prevede momenti di confronto e riflessione sul paesaggio sonoro del vulcano, sessioni di ascolto e condivisione con altri field recordist in un’ottica didattico-esperienziale, culminando in una soundwalk notturna lungo le pendici del vulcano.

Workshop Goals
•Develop active listening: train the ability to consciously listen to the natural sound environment.
• Learn field recording techniques: use of microphones, portable recorders, windshields, and microphone techniques specific to natural environments.
• Document the unique sounds of the volcano: collect geological sounds (blasts, flows, ground movements – refer to the archive, I imagine) and environmental sounds (wind, fauna, vegetation).
• Identify and record local fauna: learn to recognize and capture the sounds of birds, insects, and other animals.
• Understand the geographical and acoustic context: explore how volcanic orography influences sound propagation.
• Integrate concepts of sound ecology: reflect on the role of sound in understanding the natural environment and the relationship between natural sounds and human activity.
• Foster a sensory and meditative approach: use sound as a tool for deep connection with nature.
• Create an original sound library: build a personal archive of unique natural sounds to use in artistic, scientific, or educational projects.
• Stimulate interdisciplinary creative projects: encourage the use of field recordings in musical compositions, sound design, installations, documentaries, and environmental art.
Program
Day 1: Arrival of participants and accommodation; welcome, workshop introduction, and check audio equipment; introduction to the use of environmental microphone techniques; Excursion No. 1.
Day 2: Excursion No. 2 – interaction between acoustic instruments, generated sounds and the sound space; studio listening of recorded material, mixing & editing of recorded material;
Day 3: Excursion No. 3 – recordings; studio listening of recorded material; mixing & editing of recorded material;
Day 4: Excursion No. 4 – use of hydrophones; studio listening of recorded material; mixing & editing of recorded material;
Day 5: Brunch Listening Session // Field Recordists Works; open Meeting // online meeting and reflection with Field Recordists (Fabrizio Saiu, Nicola Di Croce, Koenraad Ecker); evening soundwalk on the volcano using field recording & material recorded in the previous days.

Obiettivi del Workshop
• Sviluppare l’ascolto attivo: allenare la capacità di ascoltare consapevolmente l’ambiente sonoro naturale.
• Apprendere le tecniche di registrazione sul campo: uso di microfoni, registratori portatili, paravento e tecniche microfoniche specifiche per ambienti naturali.
• Documentare i suoni del vulcano: raccogliere suoni geologici (soffi, colate, movimenti del terreno) e ambientali (vento, fauna, vegetazione).
• Individuare e registrare la fauna locale: imparare a riconoscere e catturare suoni di uccelli, insetti, e altri animali.
• Capire il contesto geografico e acustico: esplorare come l’orografia vulcanica influisce sulla propagazione del suono.
• Integrare nozioni di ecologia sonora: riflettere sul ruolo del suono nella comprensione dell’ambiente naturale e sul rapporto tra suoni naturali e attività umane.
• Favorire un approccio sensoriale e meditativo: usare il suono come strumento di connessione profonda con la natura.
• Creare una libreria sonora originale: costruire un archivio personale di suoni naturali unici da utilizzare in progetti artistici, scientifici o educativi.
• Stimolare progetti creativi interdisciplinari: incoraggiare l’uso dei field recordings in composizioni musicali, sound design, installazioni, documentari e arte ambientale.

SARA PERSICO is an Italian sound artist, composer, and performer whose work focuses on the voice and sound experimentation through analog electronics, field recordings, and vocal processing. She earned a degree in singing and performance from the Conservatory of Naples (2012) and a master’s degree from the Conservatory of Bologna (2015).
Sara has participated in numerous artist residencies, including Tempo Studio (Lisbon, 2018), Amplify Berlin (2021), Summersessions (Argentiera, 2022), Goethe Institut (Beirut, 2023), MusicBoard Berlin (Kampala, 2023), and Mutant Radio (Tbilisi, 2024). Her performances have been presented at festivals and venues such as Berlin Atonal, documenta fifteen, Ballroom Blitz Beirut, CTM, Nyege Nyege Festival, Ormside Projects, Dancity Festival, and Santarcangelo Festival. She has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Evelyn Saylor’s vocal ensemble for the “light years” show by Caterina Barbieri at the Rewire Festival and Southbank Centre in London, and has worked with artists such as Elvin Brandhi, Andy Moor (The Ex), Tony Elieh, Ludwig Wandinger, Dirar Kalash, and Francesca Grilli.
Her debut EP, *Boundary*, was released in March 2023 on Karlrecords, while her latest work, *Sphaîra*, was released in February 2025 on the Subtext Recordings label. She was also selected as one of the artists for the Shape+ Platform for 2023/24.
GABRIELE MITELLI is a musician focused on electroacoustic research, composer, curator, and educator. He began his career in the field of radical improvisation and continued his research by developing a personal language that could encompass the analog techniques of electronic music and the use of extended techniques with wind instruments. Since 2019, he has released several albums as a leader for some of the most prestigious labels, such as Clean Feed Records, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, and We Insist! Records, consistently ranking among the best albums in European charts related to experimental music and radical improvisation.
In just a few years, he has performed with some of the leading figures in boundary-pushing music, including Mariam Rezaei, Mats Gustafsson, Anna Högberg, Mette Rasmussen, Wayne Horovitz, Susanna Santos Silva, Elio Martusciello, Tobias Delius, Cristiano Calcagnile, Nino Locatelli, Jeff Parker, Chad Taylor, Ken Vandermark, Rob Mazurek, John Edwards, Mark Sanders, Pasquale Mirra, Alexander Hawkins, Chris Speed, Gianluca Petrella, and Ralph Alessi.
Through his projects, he has performed at some of the most prestigious festivals and clubs in Europe, including Rewire (NL), Jazz Is Dead (IT), Berlin Jazz Festival (DE), Meteo Festival (FR), Café Oto (UK), Pardon Tutu (PL), and many others.
Gabriele is also the curator and creator of Progetto Bao, a cultural hub in Brescia that invites artists from around the world who work on Sound Studies, Electroacoustic Music, and Public Space Performance. He is the promoter of BAO MUSIC FESTIVAL and BAO SOUND EXPERIENCE.
